I work with lots of women who experience Empty Nest Syndrome when their children are all out of the house!  One of the very first things I have them focus on as a new empty nester is THEMSELVES.  Let’s face it you have been the maid, the chef, the uber driver, the laundry service, the night watchman for the last couple of decades.  Guess what? It is time for you now!  It is not going to be second nature for most of you, but if you are like me, and lots of the moms I work with, it is going to be amazing once you learn to put yourself first!  You have earned it AND you deserve it.

Becoming an empty nester is a profound transition. However, it’s also a unique opportunity to invest in self-care and to rekindle old passions and discover new ones.  Continue reading below to discover how Empty Nesters can re-focus and prioritize their self care, and re-discover old passions through this major life shift.

Embrace the Silence

The quiet can feel overwhelming at first, but try to view it as a blank canvas. Use this time to reflect on what you love and what you’ve missed. Have you always wanted to paint, write, or play an instrument? Now is the time to explore those interests without interruptions. Create a dedicated space in your home for your hobbies—a place where you can lose yourself and rediscover joy.

Prioritize Your Well-being

Self-care is paramount during this transition. Focus on your physical, emotional, and mental health. Regular exercise, healthy eating, and sufficient sleep are crucial. Consider starting a new fitness routine, such as yoga or pilates, which can also help in reducing stress and increasing mindfulness. And at the end of each day, try to do one kind thing for yourself. Whether it is to put on your comfiest clothes, soak in a bubble bath, or read from your favorite book, finding moments to be nice to yourself during this time is crucial.

Reconnect with Yourself

Think back to your younger self. What were your dreams and aspirations before the demands of parenting took precedence? Whether it’s traveling, learning a new language, or taking up gardening, this is your time to revisit those ambitions. Journaling can be a powerful tool to help you explore and organize these thoughts as you set new personal goals.

Indulge in Solitude

Learn to enjoy your own company. Take yourself out on dates—visit a museum, see a movie, or dine at your favorite restaurant. Solitude can be immensely fulfilling when you engage in activities that bring you happiness and peace.

Seek Professional Guidance

If you’re struggling to adjust, consider seeking the help of a therapist or life coach. They can provide valuable tools and strategies to navigate this transition and help you focus on personal growth and self-discovery.

Conclusion

Embracing self-care and rediscovering old passions and finding new ones as an empty nester is not just about filling the void; it’s about celebrating this new chapter in your life. It’s a time to honor yourself and the journey you’ve been on, and to look forward to the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.  Remember it is a process and one that takes time.  There is a healthy way to adjust and enjoy!
