For me, mentality is an all-encompassing term that includes discipline, confidence, faith, work ethic, desire, aggression, ego, coachability, and more. Despite the vastness of this subject, my goal is to share a personal experience that highlights the importance of a strong mentality, how I worked to improve mine, and actionable insights you can apply to your own life.
Facing My Own Mentality Struggles
From the age of 15 to 25, I grappled with a reputation that haunted my career: the inability to replicate my performance during practice in games. In training, I was often the best player on the team. But on game day, I’d find myself floundering. This disconnect became a defining narrative in my career. Coaches wouldn’t play me. Momentum in my career stalled. It was a tough cycle, one that drained my confidence and made me question my future in soccer.
When I left the Rangers at 23, it was a pivotal moment. The label of being just a “training player” had spread, and my versatility—playing in multiple positions—only added to the confusion. No team in Scotland wanted to take a chance on me. At that point, I saw two options:
1. Quit:
I could chalk it up to having a good run, playing for a massive club, and move on to a different career while I was still young enough.
I could acknowledge my potential, reject the negative labels, and commit fully to turning things around.
Thankfully, I chose the latter.

Transforming My Mindset
The pain of my struggles became the fuel for my transformation. Determined to improve, I dove into the world of psychology and personal development. I read books, articles, and interviews. I watched countless YouTube videos, meditated daily, journaled, visualized my goals, consulted a psychologist, and even changed my diet. There was no stone left unturned in my quest for growth.
Within six months, the results were undeniable. I went from playing for a non-league team in Scotland to participating in a Champions League qualifier with my new team in Iceland. This leap wasn’t a coincidence. It was the direct result of confronting my weaknesses head-on and working tirelessly to improve.
Adversity, I’ve learned, is often the birthplace of our greatest breakthroughs. Embracing challenges instead of shying away from them is key to unlocking our potential.
Sustained Growth and Success
The habits I built during that transformative period remain with me today. I feel more confident and free than ever when I play. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of competing in cup finals, playing in various countries, captaining teams, and experiencing the highs of success. Just last year, we won the Eastern Conference and came within a penalty shootout of clinching the championship.
If I could go from being labeled a “training player” to achieving these milestones, then so can you. The road isn’t easy, but it’s undeniably worth it.
Key Takeaways for Strengthening Your Mentality
- Self-Awareness: Recognizing your weaknesses is the first step to improvement. Letting go of your ego and admitting that there’s room to grow is vital. Self-awareness lays the foundation for meaningful change.
- Perseverance: Challenges and setbacks are inevitable. The key is to keep pushing forward. Don’t let the opinions of others deter you if you know in your heart that you’re capable.
- Belief in Yourself: Regardless of external voices, maintain an unwavering belief in your ability to succeed. Hard work and consistency will pay off in time.
- Lifelong Learning: Seek knowledge from a variety of sources. Books, videos, mentors, and even trial and error can all contribute to your growth. Being a constant learner keeps you adaptable and open to improvement.
Finding Strength in Adversity
The challenges I faced in my early 20s were painful, but they shaped me into the person and player I am today. If there’s one thing my story illustrates, it’s that adversity is not the end—it’s an opportunity. With the right mindset, you can overcome any obstacle and achieve your goals.

Closing Thoughts
Mentality is a cornerstone of success in both sport and life. Strengthening your mindset takes time, effort, and resilience. But as someone who’s walked that road, I can promise you it’s worth it. Stay self-aware, persevere, believe in yourself, and never stop learning. The rewards—both on and off the field—are waiting for you.
So keep going, keep growing, and never give up. Your future self will thank you for it.
