Step-by-Step Guide
Expand the sections below for additional guidance.
Step 1: Identify Your Master Goal

Ideal

Chapter 2, p.39

  1. Think about how you would want people to talk about the way you lived at the end of your life. Write as much as you can think of in 10 minutes, and then circle any themes you recognize.
  2. Connect these themes together into your Ideal (one overarching mission statement) that you can use as a guide for shorter-term goals. It can be one sentence, or one page, as long you connect with it and can turn it into action.
  3. Identify a 2 or 3 word mantra that resonates with you and captures the message of your Ideal.
Step 2: Visualize (But Don’t Fantasize)

Dream Goal

Chapter 3, p.57

  1. Write down a “bucket list” of major goals that you would like to accomplish in your lifetime. Have fun with it – there is nothing too big for this list!
  2. Choose one of these dreams and create a vision board made up of pictures that help visualize turning that dream into a reality. You can draw these images yourself or print them from the internet.
  3. Now, mentally contrast that positive visualization by journaling about all of the challenges currently holding you back from pursuing this dream. Think about a plan for overcoming one of these challenges.
Step 3: Outline the Story of Your Life

Horizon Goal

Chapter 4, p.75

  1. Using the seven categories of life roles introduced in this chapter, identify at least one specific role that you play within each category. If you can think of more than one, list all that come to mind.
  2. Select the role that you feel you have focused on the least over the past 3 months. Using the “bucket list” that you came up with in Step 2, choose one Dream Goal that relates to this life role.
  3. Using that Dream Goal, write down a list of 3-4 steps that would need to occur before that dream could become a reality.
Step 4: Find the Sweet Spot of Success

Milestone Goal

Chapter 5, p. 95

  1. Using the role that you identified in Step 3, write down all of the goals that you have successfully achieved within that role over the past year. List every win you can think of, big or small.
  2. Choose one of those wins and write down all of the things that needed to happen for that success to happen that were outside of your control.
  3. Now, write for 5 minutes about the ways in which this success could have helped you accomplish the mission statement you created in Step 1.
Step 5: Control the Controllables

Objectives

Chapter 6, p. 111

  1. Using a Milestone Goal that you identified during Step 4, think of three controllable Objectives that would put you in a position to achieve that goal.
  2. For each of those Objectives, write down the skills you think you need to successfully accomplish it.
  3. Circle the skill that you are weakest in, and write down a plan that you can implement to improve that skill over the next few weeks.
Step 6: Make Happiness a Habit

Task

Chapter 7, p. 129

  1. Think about a habit that you want to work on in your life. Over the next 7 days, maintain a tracking system that clearly shows when you succeeded and failed at keeping that habit.
  2. At the end of the week, look back at the failures that you recorded. On a scale of 1-10, notice any trends (e.g., the failures occurred at the same time of day, or when you were the same person), and write those trends down.
  3. Make a plan for how you will prepare for those trends over the following week, and track your results to notice any improvement.
Step 7: Deliberately Flow

Deliberately Flow

Chapter 8, p. 149

  1. The result of being aligned in your Ideal, Goals, Objectives, and Task is that the vision of who you
wish to become converts into reality of who you are becoming.
  2. Every element of the I GOT This framework is connected to the evolutionary design of the human mind,
which releases chemicals into our brains and bodies that motivate us to pursue a better version of
    ourselves.
  3. The I GOT This framework is not an “easy button” that makes life instantly turn into a piece of
cake. If you get stuck, request a free consultation with an Ideal Life coach.
